Firemint Welcomes Steve Fawkner and the Infinite Interactive Team

Creators of Flight Control and Puzzle Quest now under one roof

Melbourne, Australia – 4 January 2011 - Games studio Firemint today announced that it has acquired fellow Australian studio, Infinite Interactive. The move further boosts Firemint’s strength in designing and developing original games, while providing the Infinite Interactive team with a channel for independent publishing.

Firemint was founded by Rob Murray in 1999. It became a highly regarded work-for-hire mobile games studio before shooting to fame with iPhone hits “Flight Control” and “Real Racing” in 2009. Firemint has recently expanded to additional platforms including Nintendo DSiWare, Sony PlayStation Network, and Steam (PC and Mac). The studio now works exclusively on self-published original games.

Infinite Interactive was founded by Steve Fawkner in 1989, and is best known for the “Warlords” and “Puzzle Quest” series of games, both designed by Fawkner. Fawkner is one of the games industry’s pre-eminent innovators, and has created more than 30 games in a career spanning more than 25 years. He takes on a product management position at Firemint, and will continue to work with his current team on a game already under development.

Murray said “I’m incredibly pleased to welcome Steve and his team to Firemint. Steve is an outstanding game designer and our two studios evolved very similar philosophies of developing addictive, fun and polished original games. By bringing our studios’ talents together, we will be able to create even more awesome games – and more of them.”

Fawkner commented, “Firemint has had huge success designing, developing and publishing great original games. By joining forces, we now have a way to further develop some of the exciting new concepts we’ve been working on. This new position really frees me up to focus on game design and I can’t wait to get stuck into it!”

Murray and Fawkner first met in 2003 and in early 2006, Fawkner showed Murray an early version of Puzzle Quest, which he had prototyped over his Christmas holiday. Murray explained, “Steve and I have been talking about working together for a long time, and I remember him showing me an early version of Puzzle Quest. This inspired me to make a game during my own holidays two years later, which was Flight Control – and now, another two years later, we’ve finally found a way to work together!”

Both studios are based in Melbourne, and will be consolidated in one location at Firemint’s recently expanded offices. All games developed by the studio will be released under the Firemint name. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Nice. but don't keep them from releasing bigger titles, okay? PQ is good and all, but without its Warlords background it would never have been.

Hell yeah, so looking forward to Warlords 5.

I am hoping for more releases of the original Warlords titles on mobile platforms (i.e. Warlords, Warlords II Deluxe, etc.), I think the port of WL2 to the Pocket PC was a good example of how well that can work; though, the current phones don't allow for the fine screen control that the stylus-based UI's do. Go Steve!!!

While I don’t want to get my hopes up regarding any new Warlords games, I would like to say that WBC3 still gets regular playtime on all my computers.  When the kids are over (even with their ‘raised on polygon graphics’ age group) they eagerly ask to start up some BattleCry3 to either work on their heroes, see if they can finally beat me, or both.

I just want the crews involved to know that although this game was not a huge commercial success (mainly due to a lack of advertising) it has staying factor.

I’m glad to see there are other Warlord enthusiasts alive and kicking.  I bought the series, played them to death and have been looking for something as good ever since.  I own all the PS consoles but with the exception of Civilisation, nothing comes remotely close.  I particularly like the turn-based feature where you could stop anytime and deal with issues and get straight back to where you left off.  surpisingly, an aussie invented my favour game (series) and its great to see Steve has joined forces with other successful gaming developers.  But what I don’t see is his commitment to Warlords getting any stronger – hello Steve are you listening?  You could easily leverage your existing followers with new releases or re-releases on PS, Xbox, etc.  Worse still, I have been searching to replace my Warlords series with a completely new set – keep your wife away from your gaming collection – and I’m looking at buying all from overseas off ebay.  Whats wrong with that huh?  Alternatively, sell the warlords copyright to someone who wont let the fans down by wasting their time on puzzles f*#%ing mania.  Now I have that out of my system I just want to say thanks to Steve Fawkner for having such a great idea, that no one has come close to improving upon in the past 20 years.  I hope you’re stinking rich and your kids beat you regularly.
