The 1.12 update to Real Racing 2 and Real Racing 2 HD includes two exciting new features for use with iPad 2 and iPhone 4S: AirPlay and Party Play. Here’s a handy guide for setting them up.

Setting up AirPlay

You’ll need the following:

  • An iPad 2 or iPhone 4S with iOS 5
  • A copy of Real Racing 2 (iPhone) or Real Racing 2 HD (iPad) v1.12
  • Apple TV with the latest OS installed
  • Apple TV compatible display (example: a nice big HD TV)
  • Secure, stable Wi-Fi network

Instructions:

  1. Ensure that your Apple TV is properly connected to your display and your Wi-Fi network
  2. Connect your iPad 2/iPhone 4S to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV
  3. On your iPad 2/iPhone 4S, press the home screen button twice to show the multi-tasking tray
  4. Swipe the multi-tasking tray from left to right to reveal the media controls
  5. Tap the AirPlay icon beside the volume control
  6. Select your Apple TV from the pop-up menu and ensure that Mirroring is turned ON. Your Apple TV display will now replicate the screen of your iOS device and show the AirPlay icon in the top right of the screen.

Setting up Party Play

Setting up Party Play is almost the same as hosting a normal local multiplayer race. There are two differences:

  • The host player needs to be using an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, all other players joining can use any compatible iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
  • The host player needs to be connected to the TV via AirPlay, or via the Apple Digital AV Adapter

Instructions:

  1. Connect the host to the display via AirPlay (instructions above) or through the Apple Digital AV Adapter (instructions here: http://firemint.com/2010/how-do-i-play-real-racing-2-hd-on-my-hdtv-at-full-1080p/)
  2. Connect all competing devices to the same Wi-Fi network
  3. Launch Real Racing 2 on all devices joining the Party Play session
  4. On the host device, at the main menu select Multiplayer>Local>Host
  5. For all other players, at the main menu select Multiplayer>Local>Join, then select the host’s game
  6. The host can now start the race when all other players are ready

Really neat idea. Doesn’t work very well though. I found it quite easy to set up, but as expected, it has latency problems, and the frame rate isn’t very good either. Frequently stutters and stalls…basically unplayable. Hope to see it improve over time, but surely there’s a limit to how much you can do to fix the latency.

Reasons I Hate This : – Have To Use Apple TV
    – Have To Use iPad 2 Or iPhone 4S
    – Apple TV Is Expensive
    – iPad 2 Or iPhone 4S Is Expensive
    – Not Very Easy To Set Up
    – Needs Good WiFi
    – Needs Latest Version
    – Damage Graphics Is Not Pretty Good
    – Steer A Little And You Alredy Drift
    – Less Drifting
    – To Many Laps
    – To Hard To Find Money
    – Not Much Cars And Manufacture
    – Expensive ( When Downlading )
Reasons I Like It : – Good Graphics Quality
    – Fast LAN Connection

But This Game Is Awesome! I Like This Game. I Only Dislike The Via Airplay,Although Theres Still Numerous Amount Of Problems. But It’s Great!

I’m having the same problem as other users. I have an ipad2 running 5.0.1 with Apple TV which completed downloading the latest update for it. I have no trouble activating the AirPlay setting in the multitasking tray. However, only the audio streams. No video. Tried rebooting several times. Videos and pictures play and display just fine. Any suggestions? Happy Holidays!

Just want to inform you guys that I got the above working fine with both my iPad 1 and iPhone 4 (not 4S) so also works with them. And if you’re going to use Airplay, I highly suggest getting Plex server on your computer and then the Plex app on your iPad/iPhone as you can then stream ANY movie file onto your Apple TV.

    Does this work with airmediaplayer?

The icon for AirPlay isn’t showing up! What should I o? This is very urgent.

  • Cyle

Well this could be due to a couple things… First, as the article states, make sure that your Apple TV 2 and iPhone 4S/iPad 2 (with iOS 5) are connected to the same network. When you double press the home button, and swipe from left to right, the iPod controls will show, then you swipe again to show the AirPlay icon by a volume slider. If the icon is not there, and you are on one of the devices as stated before, while being on the same network, the problem may lay with your Apple TV 2. In the settings on the Apple TV 2 you must have AirPlay enabled. If everything is setup as the way the article and and I have described it, and it still hasn’t worked, it would be nice to know your specific setup.

Mirror must be set to on.

Tried this with my iPad2 and Apple TV 2 and it works! Just sometimes on the TV, the image got frozen on the screen, but the game continued…any idea why the reason could be?
